Doctor Who: Planet Of The Dead

Fleeing the scene of her latest daring break-in, posh totty and artistocratic burglar Lady Christina de Souza (Michelle Ryan) steps abroad a number 200 London bus, closely followed by The Doctor (David Tennant) who is tracking a small "tear in space".

Unfortunately for both of them as the bus goes through an underpass it bursts through the wormhole and ends up on the desert planet of San Helios. Until a year ago, San Helios was a plush, thriving world of greenery and cities - until a swarm of omnivorous flying manta rays turned up and devoured everything.

The Doctor and Christina rally the bus passengers to try and find an escape back through the wormhole - before the manta ray creatures can get through and do the same thing to Earth that they did to San Helios.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, the police - who were chasing Lady Christina - have called in UNIT to deal with the disappearance of the bus and the sudden appearance of the wormhole.

The UNIT detachment is headed by Captain Erisa Magambo (Noma Dumezweni), who we saw in Turn Left assisting Donna and Rose. Here she is teamed with enthusiastic scientist Professor Malcolm Taylor (Lee Evans), a big fan of The Doctor, and Bernard Quatermass (it has long been speculated that Doctor Who and Quatermass existed in the "same universe" and this fanboy Easter Egg will add fuel to that particular debate).

As the clock ticks down on David Tennant's reign as The Time Lord (and Russell T Davies' stint as showrunner), it doesn't look like either David or RTD are taking their foot off the gas and just coasting.

Planet Of The Dead may not have been a massive epic, but it was still an hour of non-stop excitement.

The compact, and well-crafted story only got silly during the whole "flying bus" sequence at the end, which went on a bit too long for my liking and was rather too "Harry Potter".

Nevertheless, David Tennant rocked, as always, as The Doctor and even the celebrity guest stars brought their "A-game" to the table; Michelle Ryan was suave, sexy and dynamic as the modern-day Raffles while Lee Evans exceeded my (low) expectations and was genuinely fantastic (something I never thought I'd say). I'd be quite happy if either of these characters popped up again in future Doctor Who yarns.

While, generally, the story was a standalone special, which could have taken place anywhere during The Doctor's post-Donna solo travels, RTD managed to seed in some ominous foreshadowing of the 10th Doctor's impending exit - with talk of his "song coming to an end" and someone returning from out of the dark "who will knock four times".

Will it be The Master, Davros... who knows? But I'm dying to find out. Not sure I can wait until Christmas though!

At the end of the episode we learned that The Doctor returns later in the year in The Waters Of Mars, which is believed to be a prequel to the 10 Doctor's two-part finale.

  1. Yep. Great episode all round. Michelle Ryan did a terrific job as a faux Lara Croft, and Lee Evans well and truly earned his wings in the Who Hall of Fame.

The only criticism from by youngest son was that there wasn't enough TARDIS. He's a hardcore fan of the ol' blue box. What can I say?

Overall: superb. More of the same, please!

  2. I felt the lack of TARDIS action worked as a one-off, but I don't think your son need worry - I very much doubt this is going to set a trend. The old girl is an essential part of the Doctor Who mythos - I can't imagine Auntie Beeb writing her out of the series anytime soon :)

  3. Remember the "drumming" the Master heard? That was four beats... or knocks.

  4. I just hope we're not all building our hopes up too high about a possible return of The Master - as incredible as that could be (The Sound Of Drums being possibly my favourite single episode of the new Who)

  5. great episode really. just so ye know, the new 2010 doctor ( matt smith ) 's companion will be Donna's granddad. This is kinda odd bc it might lead to donna's discover of her past with the doctor. oh and also i think that the 4 beats of the master is a timelord's heartbeat he's hearing. Humans have 2 beats at a time so Timelords must have 4.

  6. Wilf as the companion? Really? Hadn't heard that one before!

Sounds like everyone reckons The Master is coming back though - I'm still not 100% convinced yet, having been led a merry dance by RTD before.

    But I'm loving the speculation.

  7. Some more wild - but interesting - speculation about the return of The Master: http://io9.com/5208279/doctor-whos-next-title-teases-anagram-addicts

  8. There's still a chance it'll be the Meddling Monk, right? Unless things didn't work out with Tennant's Hamlet co-star...

Opinion on the episode as a whole: Light fluff, not unpleasant, but not particularly remarkable. Seeing as I thought the last 2 specials had tonal problems, I'd call that a success.

  9. Good to have you onboard, Siskoid. The Meddling Monk would be good - but then that would another Gallifreyan who survived the Time War. More watch shenanigans to avoid early detection?

Another vague clue that it might be The Master though is that next week's Radio Times includes a code for a free episode of Doctor Who on iTunes and the episode is: Last Of The Timelords. Could be they're priming the general public for a return appearance? Or it could be a co-incidence!

  10. Sure. I'm only going by the interview Patrick Stewart gave at the end of last year. And such things are completely unreliable.

The 4 knocks/Sound of Drums thing also makes me believe in the Master.

And I don't think the Monk constitutes a dangerous enough foe to end a Doctor.

  11. Let's not rule The Monk out though - how great would it be to have Patrick Stewart in Doctor Who?

With MONTHS to go, it's too early to rule anyone out yet ;-)
