I have waxed wistfully before about the special place Fantastic Four #17 holds in my heart - as the first comic book story I have vivid memories of reading, albeit in a British reprint title.
Oh, how I've longed to obtain an actual copy of the original story, but I'm not willing (or able) to spare the several hundred pounds a decent copy of that 51-year-old comic would set me back. I'm pretty sure I'd also have great difficulty justifying such a purchase to Rachel!
However, towards the end of last year, I discovered that in the late '60s Marvel was publishing a reprint title of its own: Marvel Collectors' Item Classics and issue 12 contained the story from Fantastic Four #17... along with old Hulk, Dr Strange and Iron Man tales.
Off to jolly old eBay I went and very quickly found a VG/FN graded issue 12 for a far more reasonable £6.49 (plus £2 postage and packaging).
Buy It Now duly clicked and the comic arrived in great shape this week. Yes, of course, I'd still love to own a copy of an original Fantastic Four #17 but this is as close as I'm going to get for a long while I expect.
