Just when I thought my days of buying new roleplaying games were a thing a of the past, Modiphius Entertainment goes and announces a official, licensed John Carter (of Mars) RPG.
How can I say no?
The game will use the 2d20 LITE system, said to be a streamlined version of the 2d20 system featured in their Mutant Chronicles, INFINITY and Conan roleplaying games.
Slightly concerned that, as with the Disney movie the other year (which I adored, but notoriously tanked at the box office), it fails to mention "Mars" (aka Barsoom to its inhabitants) in the game title, presumably aiming to sell on the strength of the name alone.
The trouble is, as much as we'd like to think otherwise, John Carter doesn't have the recognition factor of Edgar Rice Burrough's other popular creation: Tarzan.
But, of course, much can change between now and the game's release scheduled for this Christmas.
Explore the wonders of Barsoom from the vast deserts to the ancient cities. Discover the forgotten secrets of a world that was old when life first spawned in the oceans of Earth. Play as pilots, warriors, scientists, or one of the terrifying green Tharks. Create you own Barsoom adventures or take on the great journeys as John Carter himself along side Dejah Thoris, Kantos Kan, Xodar, Tars Tarkas, Thuvia of Ptarth, Carthoris of Helium or any of the other major heroes and heroines of Barsoom. This is then going to be followed in 2016 by a range of John Carter miniatures and then a boardgame.
So much for me cutting down on my game spending! But I think this is a justified expenditure...
