Thoughts From Revenge Of The Sith...

The Great Star Wars Challenge continues.

I feel I should emphasise  to readers that these "Thoughts From..." are not reviews of the Star Wars saga (I sort of did that back in 2007, when I watched the entire saga with Rachel. You can find links to those short reviews/commentaries here) but just observations of elements that have struck me this time round, such as characters and locales I'd be happy to revisit in the 'new canon' Star Wars Universe.

My thoughts from this viewing of Revenge Of The Sith:

GENERAL GRIEVOUS: a cyborg, rather than a droid (hence a grudging acceptance of the fact that he has asthma or some such breathing problem), my main beef is with his on-the-nose name. While the Sith titles (such as Sidious and Plagueis) are ritual appellations, having the given name of the leader of the droid army as in-your-face as Grievous in a bit daft (pretty much on a par with the Imperial officer in Rebels called Kallus). There was an interesting article on Star Wars.com the other week about naming characters in the Star Wars Universe and where it works, it's clever and memorable, but when it goes over-the-top, like here, it's memorable for all the wrong reasons. On the other hand, perhaps, whoever 'built' Grievous gave him that name to be menacing and he was always destined to be a war leader?

ANAKIN'S DREAMS: Anakin's descent into the dark side is due in large part to his reactions to his prophetic dreams (ie. trying to change the fate of his mother and prevent Padmé's death). Did these dreams/visions continue during his time as Darth Vader? Or were they planted in his mind by Palatine (Darth Sidious) to steer Anakin towards the dark side? I'd love to see this point addressed in the new Darth Vader comics.

DARTH WIENER: The Prequels would have been narratively so much stronger if they had focused on Obi-Wan as the protagonist and kept Anakin as a secondary character. Anakin is such a whiny bitch through much of this movie I'm surprised Mace Windu didn't just smack him upside the head and kick him out of the Jedi Order.

MACE WINDU: Talking of Mace Windu. I know he got his hand cut off, zapped with force lightning and propelled out a window hundreds of floors up over Coruscant, but are we sure he died? We never saw a body! And he was Mace freakin' Windu after all...

OPERA! Revenge of The Sith may share many of the script issues of the other Prequels, but there's also plenty of great scenes and universe-building. One that gets me every time is Anakin's visit to the Coruscant Opera. Like the televised sport in Attack of The Clones, the alien opera - with giant bubbles and flying things - is going on in the background, but I find it fascinating. It's touchs like this that add depth to the universe. I want to know more about this, and other forms of musical entertainment in the Star Wars Universe.

I AM YOUR FATHER: Anakin was supposedly conceived by the midi-chlorians and Palatine talks about Darth Plagueis having the power to create life from The Force, a skill he taught his apprentice, who then killed him. I've always assumed Palpatine/Sidious was Plagueis's apprentice, so are we to assume that Sidious used his control of the dark side to impregnate Shmi?

SITH HAPPENS: "Once more the Sith shall rule the Galaxy," says Palpatine. Not 'finally' but 'once more', so they must have ruled before...

TIME TO BUILD: In the three years since Attack Of The Clones, the Death Star has gone from a schematic to a partially-built frame. It is only completed weeks before Luke destroys it in A New Hope, which is, what, eighteen or nineteen years later? And, yes, the Empire was building a second over The Forest Moon of Endor, but even that wasn't complete by Return Of The Jedi (which is set four years later). Building big weapons of mass destruction takes time and patience in the Star Wars Universe and I hope that the new films/novels/comics, going forward, stick to this belief and we don't see a stupid arms race as happened in the Expanded Universe novels and comics where every week the Empire was revealing a new, bigger, better, badder death machine.

  1. Mace Windu did in fact survive.

He landed on a cargo speeder that was delivering herpetological specimens to the Palpatine Zoo.

As he stood up to make the proclamation, "I have had it with these Sith-loving snakes on this Sith-loving speeder!!!!",a Coruscant Airshark flew up behind him and ate him whole.

The evidence of Windu's passing landed on a Lesser Moff the next day, interrupting his moffing.

    1. I tried to come up with a way to get Snakes On A Plane into my bit about Mace, but eventually decided against it... so thank you ;-) And I love the idea of turning Moff into a verb!

  2. This was the Star Wars film that we liked the best (background of Darth Vader).... thing we never really thought of when we saw the original many years ago....
... that Summer "Darth Vader Lives" became almost a popular as "May the Force be with You"... memories from my childhood....
... We agree with you, good Sir on most all of these views...

    1. Thank you. This is definitely my favourite of The Prequels, as it has the most powerful story (ie. the 'creation' of Vader) as you say.

  3. Like you, I assume Sidius/Palpatine was Darth Plagueus's apprentice (the smile gives it away). But I had assumed that Plagueus had 'impregnated' Shmi Skywalker with Anakin shortly before Sidius offed him, and that's when Palpatine started working on his plan to take over the galaxy. Which is why Palpatine couldn't teach Anakin how to create life. He never learned. My 2 cents.

    1. There's a strong argument for not explaining every dropped name or dangling plot thread in the Saga (as it it adds to verisimilitude), but I do believe the question of Anakin's parentage does need to be definitively addressed at some point.
