Preacher is the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper, Agent Carter), a conflicted preacher in a small Texas town who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that allows him to develop a highly unconventional power. Jesse, his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun, This Is England) embark on a journey to, literally, find God.Really looking forward to this as I loved the Preacher comic book series. It was the first title that I religiously 'waited for the trades', buying each trade paperback collection as it came out (rather than the individual issues) and devouring the story in episodic chunks.
As I've said before, I'm looking for this to fill the intellectual void left in my viewing schedule by the premature death of Hannibal, which sets the bar pretty high.
That shouldn't be a problem as long as Preacher stays reasonably true to the source material. I'm not expecting a slavish shot-for-shot reproduction of the Garth Ennis/Steve Dillon masterpiece, but (again citing Hannibal) it needs to capture the essence of the cult comic book series.
That said, I found this a slightly strange - and possibly misleading - trailer for Preacher as it doesn't even hint at the supernatural elements of the story or the fact that Cassidy is a vampire.
I can understand that they don't want to give too much away, but I'd have thought those elements would have been front and centre.
There are going to be people (those who don't read the descriptions under YouTube videos or visit the show's Facebook page) who are going to judge the show simply from the trailer and will possibly mistake it for a Banshee-like gritty crime thriller.
