Al Bruno III and Rocky... |
Prolific author, ex-gamer, Doctor Who geek, Al Bruno III has been a friend, and supporter, of HeroPress for as long as I can remember. His eclectic blog, variously known as The Wit And Weirdness Of Al Bruno III or simply Al Bruno III's Internet Tomfoolery, is a fixture on my blogroll and really should be on yours. As long you don't mind a regular serving of cheesecake with your geekdom.
(1) How long have you been blogging and how’d you get into it in the first place?
I have been blogging since 2008. I was mostly noodling around at first because I wasn't happy with the amount of visits me website was getting. It was a TRIPOD website, remember those?
(2) What do you blog about and how frequently do you post?
The types of posts I make are varied; Doctor Who news, movie trailers, strange stuff and pretty ladies. I hope that the folks that come for the geekery and cheesecake will stay for my prose and podcasts. The blog has had about one million visitors since I started so I think it is working, well I hope anyway.
(3) How does your blog stand out from all the rest?
My blog is home to the Binder of Shame, stories of my worst experiences as a role playing gamer. I first started writing them in 2002 and they are my main source of traffic and my main claim to fame. Some fans have turned them into audio plays and others created a TV Tropes page.
(4) What’s the best (and worst) thing about blogging?
The best thing about blogging is the immediacy of it. You post it and its out there being read and enjoyed, feedback can be immediate. I imagine it must be what folks making 'zines back in the day must have felt like.
The worst thing? Sometimes that immediacy can bite you. I have managed to offend people a few times, one time I used a picture without the model's permission and she (rightfully) took me to the woodshed over it. Another post of mine started a flame war in the comments section because the story had a rape joke in it. I still feel bad about both incidents.
(5) Do you have any self-imposed rules (or guidelines) for your blog?
No nudity just cheesecake. No hate speech unless I am using it to demonstrate that racists and homophobes are morons. No asking for donations more than once a week.
(6) Name one blog everyone should be reading (other than your own).
I have really been enjoying We Hate Movies. They are a movie riffing podcast and they crack me up. Andrew Jupin, Stephen Sajdak, Eric Szyszka and Chris Cabin have really helped me get through same bad days and frequently cause me to spit soda all over my keyboard.
