As there's a bit of a horror vibe to HeroPress this year, we're kicking off 2016 by interviewing Alex DiVincenzo of Broke Horror Fan
(1) How long have you been blogging and how’d you get into it in the first place?
I started blogging when I was 15 or 16, so I've been going strong for about 10 years now. I've always enjoyed writing, so it made sense to start a blog. My friends didn't care about movies the way I did, so I began blogging to share my opinions with other like-minded film fans on the internet.
(2) What do you blog about and how frequently do you post?
I write about horror movies on BrokeHorrorFan.com. I post several times a day; everything including news, reviews, interviews, editorials and more. I usually post two or three long-form articles a week, in addition to the quick news posts that go up every day. I benefit from working on a computer, at my regular job, so I have the time to post quick thing throughout the day.
|The Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters set |
(due out this month) is one of the many items
of horror-themed merchandise profiled
on Broke Horror Fan
I had written for several well-established horror sites prior start starting Broke Horror Fan, and I knew I needed to do something different in order to stand out. As the name suggests, Broke Horror Fan focuses on genre merchandise, memorabilia and apparel, in addition to the standard news and whatnot. While some other sites will occasionally post about merch, I feel I do a more thorough job highlighting it, whether its officially licensed or fan-made.
(4) What’s the best (and worst) thing about blogging?
The best thing about blogging is the feeling you get when people enjoy and respond to a post you put a lot of time and effort into. It's gratifying to know someone checked out a movie based on your recommendation. There's also a great sense of community among horror fans like no other. The worst aspect, by far, is the pay - of which there is very little.
(5) Do you have any self-imposed rules (or guidelines) for your blog?
I pride myself in being the sole voice of Broke Horror Fan. I've received tempting offers from guest bloggers, but I feel it's important to the integrity of the site to maintain regularity and familiarity. Other than that, I will post anything that is of interest to me or that I think will interest my readers.
(6) Name one blog everyone should be reading (other than your own).
Dinosaur Dracula is one of my favorite sites. It's a unique look at nostalgic items from your childhood and cool/weird new products that hit the market.
