Despite getting some juicy inside information on the Arena Club - and the Council Of Nine - Peggy and Chief Sousa find their plans to raid to the villains' lair thwarted by government bureaucracy in the form of the slimy Vernon Masters.
Jason Wilkes is starting to suffer further side effects from his current intangible state, including hallucinations, while Whitney Frost is discovering that the more she uses her new power, the larger the 'cracks' appear on her face!
As well as the main plot, Smoke & Mirrors treated us to flashbacks of Whitney growing up in the town of Broxton (a famous town in Marvel Comics, particularly to those who read the Thor title), and Peggy's life before she became a spy.
We see her working as a code breaker at Bletchley Park, learn about her engagement, and then the harrowing occurrence on the eve of her wedding that prompted her to take a job offer from the SOE.
Once again, Agent Carter demonstrates its incredible knack of blending powerful character material with some good old fashioned spy-fi.
While this episode may not have advanced the main plot that far, it did put Peggy face-to-face with a truly dangerous opponent, Vernon Masters; put a name to the conspiratorial bad guys (The Council Of Nine); and gave the SSR a hint, at least, that something is not quite right with Whitney Frost.
