It's been a long, uneven, and occasionally tortuous, road getting here but Season Ten of Supernatural has finally reached its finale... and gone out in style!
Brother's Keeper was a truly magnificent end to this troubled season, not just for the episode itself but for the foreshadowing of Season Eleven's Big Bad: The Darkness.
Dean has gone off the reservation and is becoming increasingly brusque and confrontational, while Sam is struggling to corral his resources and acquire the necessary ingredients to (hopefully) remove the Mark of Cain from his brother.
Eventually, after he causes the death of another hunter, what little humanity is left in Dean summons Death (Julian Richings) to put an end to his immortal, cursed life.
Death, however, explains the background to the Mark of Cain and its connection to The Darkness, the great evil that existed before God created Heaven and Earth. He instead offers Dean the chance to be taken somewhere away from the Earth where he can continue to exist, but not be a threat to anyone.
There's one sticking point with this deal, though: Sam's unwavering determination to always protect his brother.
Meanwhile, Castiel and Crowley strike a deal to retrieve the spell ingredients for Rowena - and, as should be expected by now, things don't run smoothly.
Although Rowena slipped back into pantomime mode for a while in Brother's Keeper, by the end there was the suggestion that not only would she be sticking around but that she could become a major problem with the Winchesters and their allies.
There's certainly something enthrallingly apocalyptic and Lovecraftian about the set-up for The Darkness (although I hope there's more to "it" than black smoke, as that shtick has already been claimed by the demons of the Supernatural 'Verse).
And we have to wonder what the broader effect of Dean's actions (as related to Death) will be for the world as a whole. Are we looking at a Torchwood: Miracle Day scenario? The initial suggestion, from what was happening with Casteil, Crowley, and Rowena, is 'no' but presumably there will be some fallout.
