|Going Full Hobbit: Tolkien About Chilham|
There's an undeniable frisson of geeky excitement when the action in an American comic features a part of England near where I live, so I was delighted to turn the page in The Hellblazer Rebirth issue (one of the latest offerings from DC Comics' new initiative) and see a caption mentioning "Chilham Village, Kent".
That's just down the road from me, well less than an hour's drive anyway, and it has a castle (a grand manor house, actually). But then I looked at the illustrations and realised something was seriously wrong.
Now, Chilham is a quaint little village of Tudor buildings, but the comic's artist - Moritat - appeared to have been using pictures of Hobbiton (from Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings movies) as reference!
I couldn't help but be reminded of when DC Comics featured a superhero from my home town of Tunbridge Wells (whatever became of Dexter Fairfax aka Looking Glass?), way back in the awesome Invasion! event of 1988, and they managed to draw the place to look bizarrely like stereotypical Swiss village off the top of an old box of chocolates.
At least then they had the excuse of "no internet", but these days you can take a virtual walk down most English country lanes, thanks to Google Street View and see what the place really looks like.
