At The Fleapit: Suicide Squad (2016)

For the undecideds and the fence-sitters, I have to tell you that Suicide Squad is a helluva lot of pulpy fun.

As a 'retired' professional film reviewer, I find myself wondering if too many of my former brethren went into this with either agendas or preconceived ideas of what Suicide Squad was going to be, because a  lot of the so-called faults I've seen raised simply aren't an issue if you watch this with an open mind.

For instance, I read that the movie felt like two separate films smushed together, with Jared Leto's Joker and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn's perverse sado-masochistic love story standing outside the main plot.

That's called a sub-plot, dummy. If you don't understand this basic piece of cinematic storytelling, perhaps you shouldn't be sharing your opinions on multi-million dollar blockbusters.

The main story - a comic book twist on the Dirty Dozen trope - sees bad-ass bureaucrat Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembling a team of metahuman criminals to confront a supernatural entity that has taken control of a city.

What they aren't told is that the entity owes its very existence to a bit of mismanagement by Waller, in her underestimating just how devious the immortal witch known as Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) actually is.

Heading the team are super-assassin Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), pacifist pyromancer Diablo (Jay Hernandez), and Australian robber Boomerang (Jai Courtney).

They're supposedly being kept in line by the explosive charges in their necks and the man holding the trigger, Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) and his bodyguard, Katana (Karen Fukuhara).

Meanwhile, as the Squad is off on its first mission, The Joker is moving into position to rescue Harley.

For a very simple plot, there's a lot going on and a lot of characters to juggle, so unfortunately some do seem to fall by the wayside.

I felt not enough humour was milked from the very small role the useless villain Slipknot (Adam Beach) played in the movie and Katana doesn't really do much at all, except hang around in the background.

Suicide Squad is a lot more fun that the previous two DC Extended Universe films - and does feature cameos from Batman (Ben Affleck) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) - although while it avoids the dull, grey/blue filter of those earlier outings, it still suffers from taking place almost entirely at night.

Given that The Enchantresses' transformed demons are essentially black, blobby creatures, and a lot of the characters' dress in subdued colours, it would have perhaps been more visually enticing to have at least some of the action take place in daylight, especially as two-thirds of the running time is devoted to the extended final boss fight.

A little thing that niggled me slightly was Harley's disappearing mallet. When the Squad are allowed to tool up for their mission, great play was made of Harley picking out her famous mallet. And then, as far as I can recall, we never saw it again and she's just using the baseball bat and handgun.

It is a minor issue though, but makes me hope that there's an extended cut of the film going to hit Blu-Ray when Suicide Squad eventually comes home, that will fill out some of these missing details (e.g. the name of The Enchantress's brother and the purpose of the 'machine' she was building; Katana's personality and her soul-eating sword... which adds nothing to the story; etc).

Diablo has the strongest character arc, while Deadshot and Harley basically just work their schtick (very effectively) and Boomerang is mainly there for laughs.

If we're going to play the comparison game, I'd say Suicide Squad is leagues ahead of Marvel's more middling fare (such as Thor: Dark World, Avengers: Age Of Ultron, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 3, and - depending on how I'm feeling at any given moment - perhaps even Captain America; The First Avenger), but not approaching their top-tier output yet.

Unlike the other the DCEU movies to date, it doesn't waste too much energy trying desperately hard not be a Marvel movie, and this works in its favour.

Instead, Suicide Squad doesn't take itself overly seriously, which certainly complements the many things it has has going in its favour, such as the charismatic central performances of Will Smith and Margot Robbie... both of which I hope get to appear in more DCEU films.

And don't forget to stay for the mid-credits scene which, to my mind, is setting up a potential Justice League vs Suicide Squad film, which I'd pay good money to see.

  1. Was Told that it is a great (Super-Powers) "Team-Up" film and an enjoyable view...
So we are willing to give this one a "Chance"..

    1. I enjoyed Leto's take on The Joker, but unfortunately - even at two hours - with so much going on, he (as a supporting character) isn't in the film as much as I would have liked.

I'm hoping there's a longer cut coming to Blu-Ray with more Joker (well, more of everyone, really)

I'll be interested to hear your views if you get to see it on the big screen.

    2. will probably have to watch someone's "boot-legged" copy...
and the recent "mess" ( from the local Rumor-Mill), we tracked the "Source" and informed the "right" people...

    3. "the Greatest Villain of this Town"... and one of the closest things that they have to a "Hero" (one who steps in and "fixes" what the Police cannot)...

  2. I totally agree with you. I had a lot of fun at this movie after waiting all year for it. I totally expected to hate it but enjoyed it a lot. Sure there are problems but it's much better than everyone gave it credit for.

    1. There does seem to be a disconnect between fans and "reviewers".

While fans are, of course, willing to let a lot slide if it's a franchise they are invested in, the reviewers seem to have forgotten that - at the end of the day - the most a film needs to succeed is to "be fun", and they waste too much time deconstructing plot and story (often tainted with their own 'political'/'social' agendas).
