Further Thoughts On Suicide Squad...

If nothing else, this year's crop of superhero movies has managed to get me invested in a pair of characters whose comic book iterations have never done anything for me, namely Deadpool and Harley Quinn.

That said, don't take my comments here as an attempt to walk back my generally positive critique of Suicide Squad from the other day, Donald Trump-style.

I stick by what I said, that Suicide Squad is a fantastic triumph of spectacle, an enjoyable piece of high-octane nonsense, where fun beats logic at every turn.

But as the days have passed I've found myself thinking back on the movie (not a good idea, honestly) and I have found some elements sticking in my craw.

First, the plan of The Enchantress and her brother (who never gets a name, as far as I can recall), is never explained. It's not that it doesn't make sense, we just don't know what she's actually actually doing.

Given that she is the film's Big Bad, I think we really should have been told what she was up to and why she was building that giant CGI "machine" (which projected rays into the sky old school Ghostbusters-style).

Or was it, fleetingly, explained and I just missed it over the near-constant gunfire and thunderous soundtrack?

Secondly, speaking of the soundtrack, the film featured a plethora of banging tunes (in the style of early Tarantino or Guardians Of The Galaxy), but I'm not wholly convinced they all worked.

For instance, one of the iconic moments from the wonderful suite of trailers was The Joker's maniacal laugh as he's lying in a circle of blades, but in the actual movie the laugh was pretty much drowned out by the random song that was playing over the scene.

Finally, and this is actually the moment that bamboozles me the most, we have the scene where Amanda Waller shoots a handful of innocent civil servants in her war-room because "they weren't cleared for this".

Cleared for what? They were working for Task Force X, so they obviously knew what was going on.

And, yes, we get that Waller is a badass - that's how she manages to stand toe-to-toe with the Squad, despite having no superpowers of her own - but that's simply unjustified homicide.

This scene has been niggling at me since I saw the film, but in my hurry to bash out a review the other day it got glossed over.

This on a par with Batman branding villains in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice: a moment of unnecessary, out-of-character, unexplained violence that I fear is Zack Snyder's continuing, rather adolescent ("Killing is good! Make it darker and more depressing!"), influence on the DC Extended Universe movies.

Hopefully, as the DCEU grows, and brings in some fresh directors, Snyder's gloomy vision of what makes great comic book movies (which worked for Watchmen, but not here) can be subsumed by a more positive, genuine Superman-friendly, comic book vibe.

  1. Enchantress was building that machine because she was mad the humans no longer worshiped gods but machines, and she was going to use it to kill everyone. (It did go by rather fast.)
And it was rather harsh she just shot those people.
    Overall, I still enjoyed it.

    1. Thanks, Alex, I got that that was her motivation, but missed the point that it was simply an ironic weapon of mass destruction, killing people with the machines they now worship!

  2. We can see Waller doing something like that (she has No conscious) ... looking forward to seeing this one, good Sir.

  3. Waller killed the people to cover her own ass. She explained that it was because 'they weren't cleared for this', but the actual reason was that she wanted as few people as possible to know that her pet superperson, Enchantress, had slipped the leash and caused the whole thing.

    1. Fair enough, thanks for clarifying that.

  4. It all falls apart when you think about it too much. I hate the studio for making us do that because the story was so full of holes as to be laughable. I mean Harley attacks the Enchantress with a bat and gun. She should be DUST but we need a sequel. I loved so much about this movie that I wish they could all take another shot at it with the same actors.

    1. I am so with you there, Cal. It was a fun romp despite itself.
