The crowdfunding campaign to publish the long-awaited Third Edition of the (for me) definitive superhero roleplaying game, Villains & Vigilantes, is now live on Kickstarter.
You can test the waters with a PDF at $15, get a softcover of the rules for $30, or grab a hardcover for $55.
Beyond that there are investment levels that will get you duplicate copies of the rules (to share at your table); the chance to own original artwork from the book; and a couple of different options that get Jack Herman and Jeff Dee, the game's creators, running an online game for you and your friends.
You can read all about the backer rewards, history of the game etc at the Kickstarter page for Villains & Vigilantes 3.0: The Mighty Protectors RPG.
A number of add-ons have already been revealed, including, at the low-cost end, PDF files of NPC villains, a folder of record sheets, up to personalised artwork by Jeff Dee of your Third Edition character.
The initial goal of the campaign is to raise $18,000 by September 19, but a number of stretch goals have already been posted:
$19,000: Mighty Protectors Referee Screen. Everyone who pledged at least $15 gets this printable 6 page / tri-fold PDF of all of the crucial lists and charts from the new game when funding reaches this level! This Kickstarter was always going to be my last big hurrah on the crowdfunding scene (which isn't to say I won't back small projects, particularly funky dice), so I'm justifying it to myself as a 50th birthday present!
$21,000: Market Forces. This 62-page adventure for Mighty Protectors becomes a $16 add-on when funding reaches this level. Written by Stephen Dedman, illustrated by Tod Allen Smith. An investigation into local organized crime turns out to have international ties!
$24,000: War Heroes. This 300+ page World War 2 sourcebook for Mighty Protectors becomes a $32 add-on when funding reaches this level. Written by Brian Adams, illustrated by Scott Sackett. Seventy characters, period vehicles and equipment, maps, a timeline, and optional rules for an ultra-low-powered Commandos campaign. Team up with Freedom Eagle, Psi-Man, and Stormlord's father, Excalibur!
$28,000: Situation Room. This new 36-page introductory adventure for Mighty Protectors becomes an $8 Add-On when funding reaches this level. When the Mighty Protectors are called off-world for an interstellar emergency, their worst enemies - The Unhuman League - launch a blood curdling operation to take over America. Can you and your teammates stop them? Written by Jack Herman and illustrated by Jeff Dee.
You know I couldn't really pass up the opportunity to get Jeff Dee to produce a colour sketch of the Acrobatic Flea (and stat him up for the new iteration of the game he was originally created for). Before the campaign was even launched this was one of the options - beyond simply getting my hands on the game - that I was really hoping would be on offer.
