As part of my birthday celebrations, my wonderful wife is taking a week-and-a-half off work to help me sort out my gamesroom.
What was once my proudest accomplishment (I've always wanted a room to display all my "stuff") has become my greatest shame.
Since Rachel and I moved to our current home, my original plans for a neatly organised "geek den" to display my comics, books, action figures, DVDs etc has spiralled out of control.
From the time I became a 'serious' collector in my teenage years, my simple mantra was "what would I like to pass on to my own child" - to give them a 'head start' in their own geeky odyssey.
Unfortunately, after my aneurysm and stroke, and the realisation that I couldn't have children, something inside me broke. This manifested itself in my 'uncontrolled' collecting, further fuelled by the money I inherited after the death of my parents, giving me the means - to a degree - to feed my hunger for "stuff".
Comics and books are now piled over the floor (sometimes in stacks, but in other places just as mountains); my games table has turned into a storage surface; and there are even parts of the room I can no longer reach!
But that's all going to change. In the bottom picture below, showing the 'office' end of the gamesroom, there are stacks of empty cardboard boxes, which will be filled with books, CDs, games, comics etc to take to charity (I've already started taking single bags full of books but I can't really take enough, when I walk up town, to make a noticeable dent in the mess).
A lot of stuff has also been earmarked for eBay. Which is a chore, but some of these books and CDs might be worth a few quid, and I could always do with the money.
All being well, on one day during our project, we're going to have a special guest helping us out. My old mate Steve is back down this way, got wind of our project and has volunteered to lend a hand.
Hopefully, in a couple of weeks, I'll be able to report that the room is looking in a much more respectable state...
