Wild Cards Gets Its Own Website...

Author and editor George RR Martin has launched a new website dedicated to his shared-world superhero saga Wild Cards.

The books have been going since 1987, featuring the work of over 40 authors, and the new site includes videos, interviews, character profiles, art galleries, details on spin-off comics and RPGs etc

Torn From The Headlines: The Quicksand Of Outer Space...

Like the meme says, do you remember how the adventure TV of our youth made us all think that quicksand was going to be a major problem in later life? I know it used to be a regular feature in my early dungeoneering experiences, but not so much since then.

However, with my tastes now shifting away from fantasy gaming towards sci-fi, I'm starting a campaign to make 'black holes' the new quicksand.

Torn From The Headlines: Just Say No!

Continuing our look at crazy cults from the other day, gamesmasters might find some more (disturbing) real world inspiration for cults that the player-characters can get tangled up with here in io9's Five Scariest Cults In Modern History.

First Taste Of Riverdale TV Series...

Really not sure what to make of this, it feels more like a CW take on Twin Peaks than Archie Comics. But colour me intrigued... I'll certainly be watching whenever it airs over here.

HeroPress Enters The 21st Century...

HeroPress is entering a new age, thanks to my wonderful wife. As well as my stunning Des Taylor picture, Rachel also go me a snazzy, high-end laptop (pictured above) for my birthday.

This means I can now blog in the lounge, while watching TV, but it's going to take a while to get used to the new machine's quirks... and optimise it to my style of operating!

Who Are The Daleks?

My favourite Doctor Who villains! If I ever get a large force of any particular alien race in the new Doctor Who: Into The Time Vortex game, it'll be daleks!

A Miniature Revolution...

The Doctor Meets Darkseid...

I've pretty much decided that if we go ahead with our Villains & Vigilantes campaign in the new year, The Tuesday Knights and I won't be using miniatures at the table - instead relying on the game's wonderful catalogue of cardboard counters.

However, I do love "new stuff" and my weakness for miniatures hasn't gone away. Therefore, factoring in storage issues, my mind turned to skirmish games (which require fewer figures) and I found myself drawn to Warlord Games' new Doctor Who: Into The Time Vortex range.

Through the Facebook Group, I managed to acquire a painted 12th Doctor (pictured above), as well as the box sets of Judoon and the Tenth Doctor & Companions, from Alistair Hocker of Ad Hoc Games.

This is a young range, the actual rules aren't even out yet, but that's good - as it's a barrier to overenthusiastic splurging. These are also larger-sized figures, which combined with the skirmish factor, means I won't need that many to make an attractive game.

Yes, I'm determined to get back into wargaming this year... even if I end up battling myself!

What Is Your Benedict Cumberbatch Name?

A slightly more frivolous name generator than my usual offerings, this one "Benedict Cumberbatch-ifies" your name!

For example, I'm now to be known as 'Bendylick Numbercrunch', while Rachel (as ever using her maiden name for variety) is 'Brodyquest Chunkybap'. If we take a couple of the Tuesday Knights, Pete is now 'Beanbag Thundercats' and Nick is 'Billiardball Uptoscratch'.

Make of this what you will. If nothing else it's a great way to generate a collection of posh-sounding names when your player-characters gatecrash the alien diplomat's ball!

Action Figure Archive: Missy-llaneous...

While the bulk of my action figure collection are the standard six or seven inches high, I have a few (generally British) figures that are around five inches high, such as Missy (above) from the recent iteration of Doctor Who and Sherlock (below) from the show of the same name.

Despite not being a fan of much Steven Moffat has brought to Doctor Who in recent years, I love the totally bonkers Missy (the latest regeneration of The Master, played by Michelle Gomez).

While I don't agree with Moffat's superstition that Time Lords can change gender when they regenerate, it works for Missy because The Master has mucked about so much with his regeneration process (from silvery snake creature forms to being resurrected with a cocktail of magical potions) that it doesn't surprise me that his form could undergo such a radical change when he was reborn again.

The Sherlock figure is not only a fine representation of Benedict Cumberbatch, but comes with a wonderful selection of props: such as the violin and the skull, that could come in very useful should I ever break him out of his packaging to display him.

Book Of The Month: The Secret History of Twin Peaks

Back in the day I devoured Twin Peaks like a slice of mighty fine cherry pie, watching all the episodes, reading Laura Palmer's Diary, listening to Agent Cooper's tapes, collecting as many issues of the erudite Wrapped In Plastic fanzine as I could find over here.

So, you can imagine how pumped I am for the return - as predicted in the show - of Twin Peaks 25 years later, with a new season of episodes due to materialise next year from the master himself, David Lynch.

In the meantime, Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost has penned an incredible book, The Secret History Of Twin Peaks, that's a must-read for all the old fans of the groundbreaking show.

Presented as the contents of a dossier, compiled by an enigmatic "archivist" (whose identity is revealed towards the end of the book), that has come into the possession of the FBI, the 360+ page tome is compiled of newspaper clipping, book excerpts, commentary from the archivist, interview transcripts, files from Agent Cooper etc, all annotated by the agent assigned to review it by Deputy Director Gordon Cole.

While the main throughline follows the lifestory of a seemingly minor character from the show - an aged Doug Milford only appeared in three episodes of the second season - the book takes us on a gleeful meander through the history of the area.

We get to relish in a picaresque journey from the Lewis & Clark expedition, Native American folklore, owls, UFOlogy, close encounters, cryptozoology, the Shaver Mysteries, occultism, Aleister Crowley, L Ron Hubbard, Richard Nixon, Roswell, and many points in-between, right up to expanded backstories for a number of key personalities from Twin Peaks itself (such as Margaret ' The Log Lady' Lanterman, Dr Lawrence Jacoby, Josie Packard, and the love triangle between Big Ed Hurley, Norma, and Nadine).

Frost weaves enough real world 'truth' into the Secret History that the joins are pretty much invisible and you can't help catching yourself, every so often, wondering just how much of the more outré aspects of the story might actually be real.

More a book of hints and clues than answers, The Secret History Of Twin Peaks isn't aimed at newcomers to the series, instead adding more meat to some of the mysteries unearthed in the original show and - perhaps - guiding us somewhat to the direction the new series might take.

If you love Twin Peaks, you have to read this  book.

Alien Invasion DVD Of The Week: Independence Day - Resurgence (2016)

After genre classics like Star Wars, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and Lord Of The Rings, 1996's Independence Day is probably my most frequently rewatched movie. I have a real softness for it and its simple, black-and-white, gung-ho storytelling.

This year's sequel, Resurgence - taking place 20 years after the events of the first film (see what they did there?) - is more of the same.

But bigger. The main alien craft has a diameter of 3,000 miles, the battle suit the alien queen wears towers over the surrounding landscape, Judd Hirsch's Julius Levinson is even more irritating... if such a thing is imaginable.

The screenplay by Nicolas Wright, James A Woods, Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich and James Vanderbilt, is crammed full of characters, most of which have a single identifying characteristic and no development (poor Angela Yeung Wing's pilot Rain Lao, for instance, is "Chinese" and that's about as deep as her character development gets).

Where Independence Day was a fun disaster movie, concentrating primarily on the impact of the first alien invasion on civilians (with a few notable exceptions), Resurgence is a dry war movie, through and through, with named and unnamed characters dropping left, right and centre, devoid of real humour and people you'd actually care about.

Having received a message from the first invasion fleet, 20 years later the aliens return (we learn they're called Harvesters, did we know that before? I don't think so), with a plan to drain Earth's molten core (as, presumably, no planets closer to their own homeworld have molten cores any more?) to use as a power source. Or something.

With Roland Emmerich at the helm, you know there's going to be plenty of explosions and large-scale property damage, but as thrilling as it is, none of it has the emotional impact of the original.

Resurgence is great fun to watch, but as soon as it ends it's largely forgettable. Superficially, it bears a lot of similarities to the original, but once you scratch below the surface it's quite hollow and disposable.

None of the new characters (except, possibly, the comic relief guy in the glasses, whose name I've totally blanked on) bring anything to the mix beyond superficiality, while most of the returning characters - such as Jeff Goldblum' David Levinson and Brent Spiner's Dr Brakish Okun - are just going through the motions, leaving the most powerful, human, moments to Bill Pullman's President Whitmore.

There's a decent "enemy-of-my-enemy" plot buried under all the special effects and the climactic sequence involving the alien queen was quite outstanding, but ultimately Resurgence is purely eye candy rather than a well-rounded cinematic experience.

I love all the alien tech, and the way humanity has adapted it to use against its original owners, but should another movie appear (as is clearly intended by the ending of this one), I hope the filmmakers rein in their fetishisation of the weaponry and battle sequences at the expense of the human side of the story, and instead focus more on developing the characters (while things are exploding all around them).

Torn From The Headlines: Places You Can't See On Google Maps...

What's the truth? Only your player-characters can find out. Or defend it.

Some great inspirational gaming nuggets here, especially the more enigmatic revelations (like the "empty field" in Los Dolores, Spain. Is it really 'empty'?).

Dominators To Invade UK In Three Weeks...

Best. Team-up. Ever! All being well, the epic (and unprecedented) four-show comic book-style crossover event - pitting the stars of Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow against a horde of alien invaders known as The Dominators - will arrive on Sky One, in the UK, in three weeks time.

So, until then, we will need to be avoiding online spoilers for this eagerly-anticipated storyline.

Torn From The Headlines: What Might Hyper-Advanced Aliens Look Like?

What would hyper-advanced aliens even look like if we could find them. Director of the Columbia Astrobiology Center at Columbia University, New York, and author of The Copernicus Complex, Caleb Scharf explains how, using advanced technology, aliens could have progressed beyond physical matter.
Food for thought for your sci-fi or superhero roleplaying games.

Throwback Thursday: A Snapshot In Time...

My arrival at the pub in London, being surprised by the appearance of my old friends...

A couple of weekends ago, Paul organised a "surprise reunion" for me with my old university buddies from Bournemouth, and Wayne - these days a professional photographer - snapped some incredible images of the day, as well as a selection of stylish portraits.

Here's a small sampling of his amazing photography.
