Barry now sees himself as a bit of a Travis Bickle "avenging angel"...
There's a current Internet meme that posits any story can be improved by adding a second line to the text that reads "And then the murders began".
And that pretty much sums up how I - playing Barry Flynn - accidentally "improved" Pete's Top Secret campaign, when the Tuesday Knights (shy of Simon and Kevin, who were both unable to make it) met last night for the second chapter of our new campaign.
Picking up from the end of last month's game, our posse of trainee and veteran agents were assigned to a reconnaissance mission on Romney Marsh, to gather intel on a rogue biochemist, Dr Jeremy Moore, based in an isolated farmhouse.
Having avoided the patrolling guard, Ivy (Erica's character) and Hermione (Clare's character), managed to peek into the house and espy some of what was going on inside (a scientist sitting at a table talking to a child).
Then Barry (my character) stepped up, sneaking to the backdoor of the farm to pick the lock. Without any real planning, he then started to push open the door... only to realise there was a guard inside wondering why the door was starting to open.
Inside Barry's Head...
And then the murders began...
In the ensuing gun battle, Barry killed five guards with his first six bullets, reloaded and took out another before his luck ran out.
Big M (Simon's character - played by committee) followed Barry in, making short work - with a spray from his machine gun - of the guards coming down the stairs.
Meanwhile, outside, Bruno (Kevin's character - again played by committee) took up a sniper position and kept the patrolling guard pinned down.
However, the Tuesday Knights' traditional problems with guard dogs resumed as Ivy found herself repeatedly unable to put a wounded guard dog out of its misery, then in the sudden chaos Hermione took a pop at the dog and ended up almost blowing Ivy's leg off by mistake!
Barry's luck ran out when his gun jammed as he and Big M headed upstairs to face Dr Moore.
Then Barry and Big M found themselves in a Mexican stand-off with the doctor. Barry tried to turn the tables by throwing a flashbang into the room; unfortunately, this allowed Moore to make a break for it. Barry, who'd already taken a few flesh wounds and a gut shot, swung for him and ended up rupturing something internally!
Big M eventually rugby tackled the doctor to the ground.
With most of the guards dead and the scientists in the house rounded up, the interrogations could begin.
Only it turned out that the "child" the women had seen earlier was actually an evil dwarf agent (possibly from Web) called Sergio, who knifed Hermione in the arm before Big M cold-cocked him in the back of the head.
Sergio, is that you?
We managed to discover that the scientists had been funded by shady Eastern European backers to experiment with increasing the potency of natural plant-based poisons.
Moore appeared to have no qualms about his work, sticking to his moral principals that such work could be used for good (fighting cancer etc)
He did reveal that he believed Sergio, who was his connection to the shady Eastern backers, was one of a number of "altered" agents who all physically resembled children.
I'm sure we will meet Sergio's kin in a future adventure.
Hermione found a landline and called in Orion to clean up our mess, and take in Sergio, Moore, the other scientists, and the surviving guards for an extensive debriefing.
Ivy and I were loaded into ambulances and rushed away for medical treatment.
In my defence, my "plan" had been to pretend to be robbing the place and keep everyone distracted while the rest of the group sneaked around and did spy stuff. Unfortunately, having come up with this idea on the fly, I didn't actually have time to tell anybody else, and there were more armed guards than I was expecting.
Luckily, it turned out that Barry was rather handy with his Colt 45!
Now sure our bosses will see it that way though, as this was supposed to be a stealth mission.
