What's Your Comfort Television?

When the mad world of student life got too much to me (living in Bournemouth, studying for my scriptwriting degree, all those millennia ago), I liked nothing more than retreating to my room for a few hours.

Armed with a stack of my housemate's Friends VHS tapes, I'd binge-watch (before there was such a concept) a half-dozen - or more - episodes of the light-weight American sitcom.

It was a soothing balm for the brain. And it did me a lot of good, having some unchallenging chuckles for a couple of hours, totally divorced from the anarchy of academia.

These days I have my daily Pointless palate cleanser, but in recent months I've discovered a more powerful fillip in Seth MacFarlane's incredible sci-fi show, The Orville.

A love-letter to Star Trek: The Next Generation, spiced up with some slightly (but not overly) risque humour and packed to the gills with clever, updated, satire and allegorical observations.

It's as relaxing as a warm, welcoming bath.

Circumstances, obviously, have changed since university, so I'm looking for something different from my "comfort television" shows.

I find that I come away from an episode of The Orville mentally refreshed, invigorated, and, more often than not, inspired.

What's your comfort viewing?

Heroes Come In All Sizes In First Teaser For Next Marvel Blockbuster...

WEEKLY WORLD NEWS: It's The End Of The World As We Know It, And I Feel Fine...

Once again, the Moon is the root cause of all our woes (according to the Weekly World News).

This time round it's not about to be obliterated by the Russians, now it's just "drifting toward Earth"!

If that doesn't inspire budding gamesmasters with apocalyptic adventure ideas (or, at the very least, some quirky NPCs), then there's always these other random tales of our mad, mad, mad world...

And they're all true!

Are You Ready To Follow The Doctor Into The Time Vortex?

I've published a new "page" on HeroPress (that can be found via the link in the left hand column of the blog) that celebrates my new-found love of  Warlord Games' Into The Time Vortex range of 38mm (1:48 scale) licensed miniatures and their use with the Doctor Who: Exterminate! tabletop wargame.

If you're not up-to-speed with this new entrant in the skirmish game arena, a good place to start would be Warlord Games' own introduction to their miniatures line and the attached game, which can be found on their blog here.

You can even get a free PDF of the game rules, direct from Warlord, here.

Currently, the links on my new page are:
I wouldn't be at all surprised if more links appeared as the game's popularity spreads throughout the web.

I'm particularly appreciative of the fact that Warlord is producing miniatures of monsters and characters from every generation of Doctor Who - and not just focusing on the escapades of the more modern Doctors.

As with Cubicle 7's RPG, the license only covers televised stories - so there won't be any official Big Finish figures (even though Nick Briggs provides the voice of the daleks in the trailer above) or anything from the numerous comic books and strips - but there's plenty to be going on with, and this year new box sets seem to be appearing every week!

And it's already getting better coverage than the RPG, with a four-page article in the Doctor Who Magazine 2018 Yearbook:

Hopefully, soon, I'll also have some dioramas - and painted figures - of my own to share with you.

Even Eternity Must End!

The fourth, and final, issue of Valiant's cosmos-spanning Eternity hits comic book stores on Wednesday, penned by Matt Kindt with art by Trevor Hairsine.
At the farthest edge of human understanding, Abram Adams – the lost cosmonaut called Divinity – and his comrade, Myshka, have discovered the purpose of their existence in this universe… and in the next one beyond our own. Now, as a seemingly infinite pantheon of mythic gods and cosmic beings rises to meet them head-on, they’ll be forced to ignite a maelstrom of untold proportions to save their child from a fate worse than annihilation…
One of the many things I love about Valiant comics is that, to a certain a degree, they are the "anti-Marvel", whereas the House Of Ideas leans towards 'decompression' (that is, stretching storylines out and 'writing for the trades'), Valiant keeps its mini-series down to four issues.

Even in its ongoing titles, story arcs are usually no more than three or four issues at a time, so there are always "jumping-on points" for new readers and nobody gets left behind.

Sure, Valiant loves its variant covers, issue zeros, and other such gimmicks, but it's the punchy storytelling that ultimately wins the day for me.

Announcing Hump Day Dreams...

As HeroPress crashes ahead into its 12th year, it seemed like a good time to launch a 'new' feature.

Will it be an in-depth analysis of gaming tropes? A breakdown of the superhero genre in film, TV, and comics? Conversions of obscure movie monsters into usable gaming statistics?

No!

It's going to be more picture dumps!

From February, I'm starting yet another "picture parade" - to help clear my hard-drive and create 'inspiration boards' along the way.

This one will be cleverly entitled Hump Day Dreams, as it will be popping up on Wednesdays (except where it would precede an established 'picture parade' - you can have too much of a good thing).

The posts will go live at 3am (UK time), so, as with other items of this ilk, is easily skippable if this sort of thing isn't your bag.

SIX OF THE BEST: City Of Iron / Necrotic Gnome Productions

The Weird That Befell Drigbolton - by Gavin Norman and Greg Gorgonmilk,
with art by Andrew Walter, and cartography by Kelvin Green -
is an adventure for Necrotic Gnome Press's campaign setting Dolmenwood

I first encountered Gavin Norman through his old school gaming blog, City Of Iron, but at the end of last year he migrated his blogging to Necrotic Gnome Productions. This new blog focuses on his publishing of material specialising in "specialising in flesh-warping, dank fungi, neural manipulation, mossy forests, forbidden rituals, fairy kingdoms, crystal resonance, and lost pathways".

While both blog still remain online, Gavin now only updates Necrotic Gnome Productions.

(1) How long have been blogging, and how’d you get into it in the first place?

My first ever blog post was in May 2010, so getting on for eight years. Wow, how time has flown!

Dredging back through the mists of memory, I recall my first adventures in writing online were in the form of a wiki. At the time, I was running a campaign with the True 20 rules and attempting to do a comprehensive rewrite of the game's magic system, which I felt was lacking.

This was a huge effort and was never completed, but updating my wiki with new and modified content gave me a taste for writing and publishing online.

I think what appealed to me about it was the combination of having an impetus to write things up properly for other people to read (i.e. not just as rough notes on scrap paper) and the possibility of getting feedback from other RPG nerds.

My True 20 campaign and the house rules wiki died out, but I soon after got the idea of moving over to a blog for my next campaign. That campaign also died out pretty quickly, but the blog had a life of its own by then and lived on.

(2) What do you blog about, and how frequently do you post?

I love writing gaming material (adventures, rule books, supplements, settings, etc), so my blog focuses on that.

My passion is old-school D&D, especially B/X, and I have penchants for fairy tales, weird fantasy, musty old forests, bio-horror, and anything relating to magic-users (especially new spells... I love new spells!).

My posts take two forms. Firstly, posts of actual gameable content - new spells, house rules, monsters, and so on. Secondly, posts about the process of writing and publishing - updates on how different projects are progressing, ideas I have for new projects, previews of artwork or layout, etc.

I find the latter type of post helps me to keep up the pace with the different projects that I have on the go and is a really useful way to get feedback from other people.

As to my frequency of posting: on average, I guess I seem to make about a post a week. I'm not a super prolific blogger, but have kept going pretty consistently over the years. Looking back, I don't see a single month in my blog's history where I didn't make at least one post.

(3) How does your blog stand out from all the rest?

One thing I can say for certain is that it contains the greatest number of vivimancer (bio-sorcerer) spells of any known blog! Other than that, I dunno... I don't harbour any illusions of world-shattering originality!

The Complete Vivimancer is just one of the many products available
from Necrotic Gnome Publications on RPGNow.com

(4) What’s the best (and worst) thing about blogging?

The best thing has got to be the feeling of community and the opportunity to get feedback on one's ideas. It used to be about discussion, as well, but I find that's moved more to G+, in recent years.

The worst thing about blogging...? I honestly can't think of anything. Blogging has always been purely a hobby for me - an activity that I do when I have free time and feel like it. No pressure whatsoever.

(5) Do you have any self-imposed rules (or guidelines) for your blog?

I stick strictly on topic - RPGs and (science) fantasy. (That goes for my G+ posts as well.) Lots of people seem to have an interest in discussing political, social, or "OSR scene" issues mixed in with their gaming, but I keep the two arenas firmly separated. There have certainly been times, in the past, where I've been tempted to comment on something or other, but I've always thought twice about it and decided not to.

(I'm not trying to sound holier-than-thou here, by the way, this is mainly about my own mental health -- I find fantasy and devoting time to hobbies very healthy and getting involved in online drama very unhealthy.)

Other than that, I don't have any kind of posting schedule or rules that I stick to. I simply post when I have something to share.

(6) Name one blog everyone should be reading (other than your own).

Bryce Lynch's ten foot pole. An amazing resource for old-school adventure recommendations. I find Bryce's reviews super insightful. As a budding writer/publisher of adventures, his comments on design philosophy are extremely useful. He's reviewed a few of my own publications, in the past, and his constructive criticism was always on-point and has very much inspired me to do better in the future.

Gavin's Dolmenwood campaign setting even has its own 'zine, Wormskin.

Sneaky Peak At Cloak & Dagger...

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to control the power of darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart.
Cloak & Dagger debuts in the States on June 7; who knows when - or if - it will materialise over here? Hopefully, if it's any good, it will pop up on Amazon Streaming or Netflix at some stage.

Admittedly, nothing I've seen yet exactly fills with thrills and anticipation, but hopefully there's more to the show than teen romance...
