In the early 1960's, at the tail end of the failed social experiment known as The Great Leap Forward, dissents Zeng Li, her husband Ping, and two-year-old son, Jié, were taken into custody by the authorities.
While Ping and Jié were sent to a forced labour camp, Li fell into the clutches of a top secret science unit (Iron Demon) conducting cutting-edge - but highly unethical - experiments into neuroplasticity and artificial muscle memory, with the aim of creating the 'ideal Communist soldier'.
Li had been chosen because she was a couple of months pregnant.
However, soon after Li gave birth to her daughter, Jing, in March 1962, Iron Demon's underground bunker where they were being experimented on was raided by members of ORION, reacting to reports of human rights abuses (and seeking to gain whatever esoteric knowledge the Chinese had gleaned from their inhuman experiments).
Narrowly escaping by the skin of their teeth, the ORION team brought the frail Li and her daughter back to the States, along with a couple of other prisoners they liberated, where they were given new identities and kept under ORION observation.
As Jing grew up, it became obvious to her ORION handlers that the experiments on her mother had been a success - Jing had a natural affinity with all forms of hand-to-hand weaponry, as well as a superhuman grace, and stealth about her.
Eventually she became so proficient with bladed weapons that she was able to chop bullets out of the air or deflect them.
Because of the trauma she had undergone in the secret facility, Zeng Li passed away when Jing was about eight, but had filled her head with stories of Ping and Jié, the family she had never met.
Now working for ORION's Fast Reaction Experimental Espionage branch (the F.R.E.E. Lancers) in Chicago, Jing has taken the codename of Wuxia, after the martial heroes of Chinese literature, and created a code of honour for herself, which means she will only take a life in a fair fight.
She sees herself as a warrior, not an assassin.
Jing hopes one day to be reunited with her father and brother, but - even with the resources of ORION/FREE Lancers - has been able to find out nothing about their whereabouts or well-being since she got to America.
She is also aware that a dogged National Security Council operative from China, Hades Dai, has been looking for her for decades, and his efforts have progressed from trying to piece together a paper trail to actively engaging with enemies of the FREE Lancers.
Hades wants to see Zeng Jing brought back to China to face charges of treason.
- What has become of her father and brother? Has her brother been subjected to any weird experiments and, maybe, turned into a Chinese super-operative (a twist befitting any good comic book)?
- Surely Zeng Li wasn't the only subject of those experiments in the 1960s?
