DC Comics, I Love You, But Please Stop...

DC Comics, I love your output (it currently accounts for approximately 60 per cent of my pull-list), but please stop with the double-dipping on your key titles.

We were all delighted when you lowered your cover prices the other year, coinciding with the Rebirth initiative and the return to greatness for your superheroes.

But then you started publishing your main titles (e.g. the Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman etc) twice a month - so we were very quickly paying MORE each month to read those titles than we had previously... because you were giving us two (slightly-lower priced) comics a month!

At first I stuck with nearly all your titles under the misguided belief that the twice-monthly schedule would only last a year at most. But you've kept it going... and I just can't keep up!

Beyond the cost factor - and that is key - there's also the fact that pumping out two issues a month (and don't forget there are currently two main Batman and two main Superman titles a month... each being published fortnightly), makes it very easy to slip behind on storylines.

You only have to not read a title for a month or two, for whatever reason, and suddenly you're four, six, more issues behind...

I'm currently having a huge catch-up drive and have dug down to the Batman layer of my 'to be read' stack, but for those in the know I've only just finished The War Of Jokes And Riddles storyline... which shows how far behind I am.

Look at the stack above: everything about the indicated board is "new comics still to be read"... and every fortnight this gets replenished with the latest issues, burying the older comics deeper and deeper into the pile.

Percentage breakdown of my pull-list - as of April, 2018

And I find myself, every few months, having to tell Andy at Paradox Comics (where I've been getting my monthly four-colour fix for over two decades) to shave off another title or two from my pull-list (even while I'm continuing to add new titles as they're announced).

Surely, there has to be a more viable business model that satisfies both readers and publishers?

I realise DC Comics is a business and a business needs to make money. But I can't believe that I'm the only long-time reader getting increasingly pissed off by the current publication schedule?

The way I look at it is that if each Batman, Superman etc title only came out once a month that would free up both time and money to pick up different titles from DC's broad portfolio.

And surely that would be a good thing?

  1. I entirely agree and I make sure to speak with my wallet. For example, Marvel and their Point One issues which were basically mini-series which they unceremoniously shoved into main titles so people would have them on their pull list... I asked my comic-book store if I could stop getting those issues, at first they didn't want to have to go through the trouble so I started dropping the titles that abused it. Eventually my store decided to filter them and people could choose not to have the Point Ones in their pull list. I spoke with my money. When it comes to DC and their double-dipping of people's pull lists, I make sure that if I have to drop a title because it got expensive to follow Batman, Detective Comics, Nightwing, etc, I'll drop a DC title and not a title from another company. I speak with my money, I send the message that if they do that, they kill their smaller titles. It's important to me that if I'm dropping a title because of a company's behavior, any title(s) I need to then drop is one from the same company. I think DC is making a mistake because while they are probably seeing a boost in sales in the short-term, a comic-book universe should never stop showing love to their C-listers in the long-term. It was the mistake they did with New 52, ignoring the long-term for a short-term profit. (Although at least universe-wise the decisions are mostly good this time around.) I would have probably picked up Sideways and the one with the female Punisher-type if they hadn't already been double-dipping into my wallet for being a Batman fan.

    1. I'm the same - and I suspect many others follow this route.

There are many of the new, smaller, titles that have piqued my interest but I simply don't have the financial capacity to actually pick up (because I'm addicted to the big titles).

And it was titles like Superwoman and New Super-Man that were the first to go when I realised Superman and Action weren't going to revert to once a month publication.
