DC Comics, I love your output (it currently accounts for approximately 60 per cent of my pull-list), but please stop with the double-dipping on your key titles.
We were all delighted when you lowered your cover prices the other year, coinciding with the Rebirth initiative and the return to greatness for your superheroes.
But then you started publishing your main titles (e.g. the Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman etc) twice a month - so we were very quickly paying MORE each month to read those titles than we had previously... because you were giving us two (slightly-lower priced) comics a month!
At first I stuck with nearly all your titles under the misguided belief that the twice-monthly schedule would only last a year at most. But you've kept it going... and I just can't keep up!
Beyond the cost factor - and that is key - there's also the fact that pumping out two issues a month (and don't forget there are currently two main Batman and two main Superman titles a month... each being published fortnightly), makes it very easy to slip behind on storylines.
You only have to not read a title for a month or two, for whatever reason, and suddenly you're four, six, more issues behind...
I'm currently having a huge catch-up drive and have dug down to the Batman layer of my 'to be read' stack, but for those in the know I've only just finished The War Of Jokes And Riddles storyline... which shows how far behind I am.
Look at the stack above: everything about the indicated board is "new comics still to be read"... and every fortnight this gets replenished with the latest issues, burying the older comics deeper and deeper into the pile.
|Percentage breakdown of my pull-list - as of April, 2018|
And I find myself, every few months, having to tell Andy at Paradox Comics (where I've been getting my monthly four-colour fix for over two decades) to shave off another title or two from my pull-list (even while I'm continuing to add new titles as they're announced).
Surely, there has to be a more viable business model that satisfies both readers and publishers?
I realise DC Comics is a business and a business needs to make money. But I can't believe that I'm the only long-time reader getting increasingly pissed off by the current publication schedule?
The way I look at it is that if each Batman, Superman etc title only came out once a month that would free up both time and money to pick up different titles from DC's broad portfolio.
And surely that would be a good thing?
