Last week, The Tuesday Knights began our new Top Secret SI campaign, inspired by Jeff Grubb's F.R.E.E.Lancers supplement, positing a "futuristic" 1998 - as seen from the 1980s - with cybernetics and limited metahuman abilities on both sides of the law.
We are no longer playing shady secret agents working for a covert organisation, instead we are duly appointed officers of the Chicago Police Department.
We are Department Seven, answering to our grizzled old boss, CONTACT, and assisted by our female tech expert, MATRIX.
Our team of anti-heroes consists of:
- The telekinetic Dr Hurt (Kevin)
- The bat-winged January Jones (Erica)
- Chinese weapons expert Wuxia (me)
- The Surgeon - with her cybernetic eye (Clare)
- Finder - the telelocator and part-time stage magician (Simon)
With the streets rife with gang violence and corruption, Pete - as gamesmaster/Administrator - cited his influences for the campaign as The Raid, Big Trouble In Little China, and Predator 2.
Our teams first assignment was to surveil a suspected late-night gangland drop-off at the rumoured money-laundering depot known as MofoCo
The gang thought to be involved were the new generation of young Chinese Triads known as Nuygen, but that was as much as our intel could tell us (which was very little to go on).
As ever, we were overly cautious to start with, whereas Pete wanted us to be more gung-ho Lethal Weapon-style cops.
Thus, soon after spotting a van turning up at the warehouse and a pay-off to the two elderly guards, we stormed in.
As Erica was unable to make the game, we only used her velvety-winged character for a bit of aerial recon, but otherwise kept her away from the inevitable flying bullets.
|The Raid 2: This is what Pete is aiming for... but we haven't quite got there yet!|
Time to kick some ass...
The ensuing gunfight was - of course - utterly chaotic and a typical SNAFU.
Wuxia, having decapitated one goon with ease, tried to show off by commando rolling then throwing her sword at the next goon ... only to miss and find herself at an aggravating disadvantage. Not a mistake she'll be repeating in a hurry!
The Surgeon got badly shot up and ended up spending a lot of the fight self-medicating and trying to stitch up her own wounds.
The Finder had not one, but two, lucky escapes from death when his police badge blocked a pair of bullets that would have otherwise done him lethal damage (canny use of Luck Points by Simon).
In the end, Wuxia captured the main gangster, who we'd codenamed 'Pinstripe Pete' - as he was wearing a pinstripe suit - and who turned out to be an Italian mafioso, and we brought in another couple of captives alive as well.
The deal appeared to involve the sale of strange rockets, but no doubt we'll find out more about them at the start of our next session.
Anyway, all this got me rethinking my approach to my character. I started designing her to be a Ninjak clone, but ended up with a Crouching Tiger, when really I think a Deadpool would be more appropriate for what Pete appears to have in mind for us.
I'm also having second thoughts about the name - as my character's not happy that her American compatriots haven't heard of 'Wuxia' and keep calling her 'Wishy-Washy'. On the other hand, I could lean into that and make it a "thing" for her. The jury's still out...
