The Golem follows a woman in a devout Jewish community that is besieged by foreign invaders who believe that the Jews have cursed them with a plague. In order to protect her village, the woman conjures a creature in the visage of her deceased child which turns out to be more dangerous than she ever imagined.Released on home video in the States today, The Golem is the first Dread Original production (from the great horror blog, Dread Central).
Set in 17th century Lithuania, Hanna (Hani Furstenberg) the wistful, conflicted wife of the local rabbi’s son Benjamin (Ishai Golen), secretly turns to Jewish mysticism and The Kabbalah to conjure up a dangerous entity to protect her community.
But the creature she moulds out of mud and summons to life echoes her tragic past and becomes so dangerously connected to its creator, that Hanna can¹t see what a heartless monster she has fashioned from abject fear and desperate loathing.
Written by Ariel Cohen, the film is directed by brothers Doron and Yoav Paz.
Featuring plague doctors, a Frankenstein monster of sorts, horror, a historical setting, and a strong female lead... this has Lamentations Of The Flame Princess written all over it!
