DC Comics' noble experiment of a daily "propaganda" show on its own streaming service - DC Universe - is coming to an end on July 3 after the plug was pulled on the show.
DC Daily, which must have been the cheapest show for Warner Brothers to produce, will have run for more than 400 episodes... but was ultimately cut down by the pressures put on it by the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
I've heard rumblings that this could be a sign that the whole DC Universe streaming service could be on the way out, as its output could easily be absorbed by HBOMax.
Not that I'd know. because DC Universe was never available over here, so we had to track down all the good stuff piecemeal across various other channels and streaming services (e.g. Titans on Netflix, Swamp Thing and Stargirl* on Prime Video, Doom Patrol on StarzPlay, Harley Quinn on E4).
When it first began in late 2018 a nice chunk of DC Daily was available free on YouTube each evening, which I got into the habit of watching every day to fan the embers of my love for DC Comics.
The idea, I guess, was to lure in potential subscribers.
And had it been available in the UK, I would have taken out a subscription without a second thought.
These days, there's no need as it turns out Warner Bros apparently has a multitude of different deals with outlets on this side of The Pond that means everything - eventually - gets here. It's just a question of tracking it down.
Should the DC Universe streaming service quietly slip away, I hope that doesn't spell the end of their original shows, which have all surprised me with how good they are, once you get over their "adult" approach to the material.
I'm hoping they'll just become part of the wider HBOMax portfolio and continue to be divvied up between various satellite and streaming services in the UK.
* It was announced in the last few days that Amazon's Prime Video streaming service has snagged Stargirl for the UK, and will start showing it from August 21.
It's a bit of a wait, but not the end of the world, and it's not as if the show has to sync up with any others for crossovers etc
