In one week, the New Mutants are coming to Comic-Con At Home! Tune in on Thursday, July 23 at 2pm pt and join Ira Madison III in a special virtual panel with the cast and director Josh Boone.Disney - if not all the film companies - need to accept that we are living in very unusual times. We're still in the middle of a pandemic and are almost certainly going to be facing a second wave of high-impact Covid cases in the weeks and months to come.
Over here, in the UK, 20th Century Fox is still adamant that New Mutants is "coming to cinemas soon", but really?
It's been held up so long because of the Disney buy-out of Fox, is there truly a massive fan base baying for the movie's cinema release?
I really want to see the much delayed New Mutants (superheroes plus Anya Taylor-Joy, what's not to like?), but not so much that I would risk my life going to the cinema.
The simple solution is, if Disney is contractually unable to release it first on Disney+, to make it available on Premium VOD.
New Mutants is a film I'd pay £15 to rent for home viewing (rather than Trolls: World Tour or even the delightful-looking Scoob!) and then, almost certainly, buy it when it was released digitally or on Blu-Ray.
This needs to be the new industry model. At least for this year. Until humanity has got its act together and found an antidote to beat this killer virus.
