Our Seventh Virtual Games' Night in Lockdown!
By the time Syr Edvard was awoken by a magical "healing word" from Ragar (Kevin's dwarven cleric), things had gone from bad to worse.
Rufus (Pete's halfling rogue) had thrown his grappling hook into the witch's giant flying half-skull and scuttled up into the strange craft - only to have been enveloped in the grotesque fiend's bosom when she mistook him for her "baby"!
Ragar, meanwhile, was hanging on the end of the halfling's rope, Dolly (Clare's character) was raining down arrows into Baba Lysaga's flying vehicle (seemingly causing more damage to Rufus than the witch), and K'Ao (Erica's character) had just wandered off (Erica was unable to attend).
Lysaga's negotiating face
She thought about this and then agreed.
While Dolly and Ragar waited outside, we reconvened inside the witch's magical crawling hut, which had now transformed its interior into a grand palace and Baba Lysaga had shifted into a much more pleasing visage.
After some haggling, when she refused the magical gifts I was offering her in exchange for the gem stolen from the Wizard of Wines, she countered with a new quest for us.
Turns out she needed the magical gem to "power" her creeping hut, so she suggested we head into the "underground" beneath Ravenloft, the realm of the Deep Elves, and retrieve a replacement gem.
Then she would let us have the Wizard of Wines' gem.
Rufus and I agreed, but it turned out there was some fine print to this deal.
She wouldn't tell us where in the underworld the gem was until we were there (she gave us directions and instructions to a barrow - in the woods by The Old Bonegrinder - that was the entrance), but she needed to keep an eye on us.
She pulled her left eye out of its socket, and then took Syr Edvard's - with his reluctant agreement - and squelched hers into his empty socket!
As well as immense burning pain in his head, Syr Edvard's vision on his left side was now grey and distorted... but a deal's a deal!
After we explained all this to the rest of the group (K'Ao and her familiar Norman had now wandered back), we hiked north to Argynvostholdt, where we made camp for the night.
The next day, as refreshed as we could be (Syr Edvard had - unsurprisingly - very weird dreams), we crossed the river by Vallaki before plunging into the dark, dank woods (guided by a strange "pulling" sensation from my 'new' eye!)..
It was very dense and overgrown and we had to stick close together, even the elf ranger was at a loss to find a safe route... luckily my eye seemed to know the way.
Although there was an eerie absence of birdsong, there was rustling to one side of our path, getting ever closer, and so we dispatched Norman the badger to investigate.
Only he never returned - much to K'Ao's horror.
Her horror deepened when we went to investigate and came across a clearing where a pair of mushroom creatures appeared to be snacking on Norman.
What a fun guy!
The once-loyal companion attacked his mistress, but luckily, I stabbed him with my Blood Spear, rendering him unconscious, so the ranger and Ragar the healer could work on him.
The mushroom men had a knack of splitting in two if we attacked them with bladed weapons, so I resorted to kicking the shit out of them, while the others pounded on the half-creatures with clubs and torches.
The myconids were quickly dispatched and we headed onwards into the creepy forest, towards the barrow entrance.
K'Ao now had to carry Norman as he was still infected by the mushroom spores - although their progress appeared to have been magically halted.
Dolly had also managed to pick up an infection in her foot and was limping a bit.
Eventually we found the stone portal marking the entrance of the barrow, with a sloping passage descending into the earth.
Slowly, we descended (Ragar estimating we were about 100 feet below the ground) and came upon a room with a broad dais.
My eye spoke to me - and I relayed this to the rest of the group. We had to sleep on the dais and then we would awaken in the realm of the Deep Elves.
Slightly reluctantly, we all lay down on the stone plinth, and eventually fell asleep.
