One of the delights of this year has been, thanks to the phenomenal popularity of The Queen's Gambit, on Netflix (a story about the rise of a chess prodigy), that the general public is finally coming to understand why I have been cheerleading so strongly for Anya Taylor-Joy.
Since 2017, in fact.
Back then, I wrote:
Remember her name and where you read it today. Anya Taylor-Joy is a future megastar. I'm calling it now, so in years to come you can tune your wayback machines to this post and say "he was right, you know, he was right!"This is just me reminding you I was right!
It's also very rewarding to discover that I'm not the only person to envision The Queen's Gambit through a Star Wars lens, with talented PhotoShoppers sliding Anya's chess maven, Beth Harmon, into the famous "let the wookie win" scene of dejarik (that galaxy's equivalent of chess) being played on the Millennium Falcon.
Also worth pointing out that you can buy your own dejarik set from Shop Disney (although sold out at time of writing).
It comes with basic rules, but I'm sure you could come up with something better.
