Having lost their halfling torchbearer, Jabo, in the previous session - when he fell off a ladder and broke his neck - last night Nick, Pete and Clare hired themselves a couple of beefy northerners (named Beowulf and Churchill) to carry torches and, at a push, add muscle to the party.
This was the group's third attempt to crack White Rabbit Castle in as many sessions of our monthly Labyrinth Lord game.
After the near-TPK last time, this time the party planned endlessly on how to get into the inner parts of the castle - little realising (until they actually went in) that the pig-faced orcs and kobolds had actually pulled back and barricaded themselves into the subterranean corridors... and decorated the barricade with the heads of the party members who had fallen last time.
A reasonably full account of the third assault on White Rabbit Castle can be found here, with more photographs of gamers sitting round a table here.
Beowulf the hireling fell victim to a green slime which dropped on him and devoured him before the party figured out that fire was their only weapon against a slime - luckily for Churchill this resulted in double wages!
There was a lot of slow and quite meticulous investigation of the upper parts of the castle and I don't think the Knights could know how close they came to finding the "secret" back way into the dungeons.
However once they finally got underground they were suddenly gripped by an urge to see as much as possible and, without throwing caution entirely to the wind, launched into a "Red Bull-fuelled" high-speed dungeon crawl.
This included an entertaining encounter with a teleporting statue (an idea cribbed from The Castle of The Mad Archmage I think) and a not-so-humourous run-in with a couple of orcs... which saw Pete's archer skewered on an orcish broadsword and reduced to exactly zero hit points.
This pretty much called a halt to the evening's fun and frolics as the other members of the group decided the best course of action now was to carry Pete's character back to their "home base".
While he heals up, this will allow the party yet more time to plot and plan for their return journey to White Rabbit Castle... and possibly recruit even more hirelings to act as meatshields!
