Tough Choices...

As I mentioned recently, the conjunction of increasing comic book prices and my own decreasing personal finances has finally meant I've been forced to make some drastic cuts to my monthly pull list from Paradox Comics.

There was a time when my list was dominated by Marvel titles, then gradually it shifted to a balance of DC and Marvel, but it's now almost entirely DC.

This move was helped by a succession of awful, money-draining "events" (One More Day, Civil War, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign) in the Marvel Universe, that were not only badly written themselves but led the Marvel Universe in a direction I had no interest in.

I also can't forgive Marvel for axing Captain Britain And MI-13.

Meanwhile DC was giving me grand epic "events", like Final Crisis (okay, I might not have entirely understood what was going on, but it was so artful that I didn't mind just being along for the ride) and now Blackest Night - which is shaping up to be the "event" to end all "events", under the masterful guidance of Geoff Johns.

Although I added the Batman/Doc Savage Special to my list this week (who wouldn't want to read that pulptastic, instant classic?), I've now dropped all the Ultimate titles from my list, along with Nova and Captain America.

I'm gutted to have to lose any of these, but the end of the Ultimatum Wave saga seemed as good a time as any to jump out of the Ultimate Universe. I read the first issues of the new look Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Avengers this week and realised quite quickly that I could live without them (not impressed with the re-invention of The Red Skull as 'just another thug', despite the clever "son of Captain America" angle).

This brings to an end my desire to collect, and read, every Ultimate title from Marvel. The line was a great experiment, but, for me, it's time to draw a line under it and move on.

I've really enjoyed both Nova and Captain America, but I'll continue to get my cosmic character fix with Guardians Of The Galaxy and I'm seeing the Captain America: Reborn mini-series through to the end - I'm still saying it's too soon to bring Steve Rogers back though; Bucky Barnes never really had a chance to establish himself as the new Captain America. But, hey, that's not my problem any more!

The only Marvel titles I'm sticking with these days are The Fantastic Four (despite Mark Millar's best efforts, this is still my favourite team of characters), Guardians Of The Galaxy (as I've already mentioned), the two Stephen King titles (The Stand and The Dark Tower) and Thor (but only until JMS leaves the title).

I guess I'll be handing in my Marvel zombie credentials on the way out the door.

  1. I hear you. I've been thinking of trimming my list as well and moving to graphic novels.

There are Marvel titles I'm still interested in (namely the mutant titles, which until now have been largely insulated from Dark Reign ... but now even they have been infected). I'm also loving the current Batman storyline (with Dick Grayson taking over the cape and cowl) but it's hard to justify all the money it takes to keep up with the hobby.

I'm strongly tempted to fall back to a core of five titles (Uncanny X-Men and a few others) and then pick up the trades as they come out.

  2. Thanks for the comments, Ken. As much as I love the floppies, trades probably will be a significant factor in my future investment in the medium as well.

(I've already pre-ordered a couple on Amazon for 2010 instead of adding the individual issues to my pull list).

  3. I hear you loud and clear. If I actually bought comics anymore instead of downloading them there would be many many titles that I would drop in a heartbeat. For me these are my top ten and all I would buy if I already didn't have 12000 in boxes downstairs. But it was tough to let go of the floppies and steal digitally.

    Guardians of the Galaxy
    Agents of Atlas
    Batman and Detective
    Living Dead
    Fear Agent
    Amazing Spider-Man
    JSA
    Elephant Men
    Superman

  4. I could see going digital (with a paid subscription) if I had a good, solid tablet computer (say, like that new Apple tablet that's been discussed so much the last few years).

I hate reading comics on my laptop, but an 8x10 tablet would be just about perfect for comic reading...

  5. Call me old fashioned - but I like comics (and books) that I can hold in my hand, feel the paper, turn the page etc

If ever comics go entirely "digital" that'll be a quick end to my collecting (except for back issues, of course)

  6. I see your point. For me, I think digital could be a good way of reading those titles that are only tangentially related to my titles. You know, those titles that would show up in your pull, and you'd say "well, what not?" Of course, that was a strategy that worked just fine when books were .75 and I was in high school. Not so much now.

That said, I think I'd always still get a handful of core titles in print. It just feels right.

  8. I was never a Marvel zombie, as the quality was never high enough across the board for that, but I grew up on Spider-Man and the Avengers, so you could consider me a Marvel fan, but of course both concepts have been run into the ground in recent years, and so, with the cancellation of Captain Britain,I'm no longer reading any Marvel comics.

(Although I may take another look at Thor once JMS leaves and Fraction takes over, and there is the prospect of new Miracleman on the horizon...)

I have no interest in switching sides however; I've never been enamoured with DC's universe, and their crossovers are even worse than Marvel's in both quantity and quality. And I really can't disagree more with your assessment of Geoff Johns; he's one of the worst comics writers I've ever read, and how he's been left in charge of the main events at DC, I don't know.

My pull list now consists only of Image books, which is something I never thought would happen. For the record, that's Invincible, Jack Staff, and King City. I think Fell and Gutsville are also on there, but they haven't come out in ages.

  9. It was the Teen Titans that got me seriously into collecting comics, after I found a stack of the Wolfman/Perez issues in a secondhand book store.

So I was a DC fan first first - with Superman & Batman et al - but then switched to Marvel, for some forgotten reason, for the longest time and have now, this year, swung back over the fence to DC.

Oh yes, Miracleman... have to see how that pans out, of course.

  10. My pull list is hanging at 50 titles a month right now. It's ridiculous, and I'm thinking of dropping some titles, too.

    It's going to hurt, though.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 50! That's pretty impressive - I think my list is down to about half that these days.

Good luck making cuts - let us know what you drop and why ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  12. My wife would say it's ridiculous :-)

As for what I'd cut, that's such a hard decision to make. I'd probably start by cutting from the series' that are currently backlogged in my collection: Detective Comics, Action Comics, The Darkness, Red Sonja, Spawn, Booster Gold, Wonder Woman, and World of Warcraft. Of course, I'll probably add them back once I get caught up, but that can take months.

Next, I might drop a few Dark Reign titles, starting with Ms. Marvel. It keeps getting co-opted by mega even after mega event, and is starting to loose its identity. Dark Avengers is also starting to loose its charm with me.

    Lets see what else...

I'm on the fence about JLA. I know the book is going through a transition, but the last few issues have done absolutely nothing for me. I think Len Wein is trying a bit too hard to make Plastic Man be funny, but I never could stand him anyway (Plastic Man, that is).

I also plan on dropping The Punisher, and instead, keep up with his exploits through Marvel's MAX imprint, which I've really been enjoying.

Lastly, I may drop some of the Dark Horse Star Wars titles, because I read too many of them: Legacy, Dark Times, Knights of the Old Republic, Clone Wars and Invasion :-)

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have a real problem with Plastic Man; to me he is a Saturday morning cartoon character, not a "real" comic book superhero. He's as funny as putting Mr Magoo or Pepe Le Pew in the Justice League!

I'm just hoping this title picks up after this month or it'll be for the chop, I'm afraid.

I'm really waiting for it to return to its glory days, when the real big guns were on the team, and it was facing threats that really were too big for any one to handle on their own.
