Iron Sky: The Coming Race is the sequel to cult sensation Iron Sky, the crowdfunded movie about Nazis hiding out on the moon after World War II, then returning decades later to try and conquer the world.
Twenty years after the events of Iron Sky, the former Nazi Moonbase has become the last refuge of mankind. Earth was devastated by a nuclear war, but buried deep under the wasteland lies a power that could save the last of humanity – or destroy it once and for all. The truth behind the creation of mankind will be revealed when an old enemy leads our heroes on an adventure into the Hollow Earth. To save humanity they must fight the Vril, an ancient shapeshifting reptilian race and their army of dinosaurs.I'll be honest, as much as I grokked the idea of the original the finished product didn't blow me away, however the newly-announced sequel ticks so many boxes that I couldn't hold off joining the funding drive: for one thing it echoes the background of that fantastic role-playing game Hollow Earth Expeditions, just with a contemporary twist. And Hitler... riding a dinosaur...
The filmmakers are looking for half-a-million dollars by December 20, to cover pre-production costs (as they already have a large injection of cash from Germany and Finland), with the aim of releasing the film in December 2016.
With fundraising through IndieGoGo, this is one of those unpopular "flexible funding" schemes which means the campaign gets to keep your money whether it reaches its target or not. But given that it made $50,000 (10 per cent of its goal) in its first day I think there's a strong probability it will hit its ambitious target.
Visit the campaign's fund-raising site to discover the various incentives for throwing your money at this project - from digital downloads and steelbook Blu-Rays through to T-shirts and set visits.
