"So, The Labyrinth Is A Piece Of Cake, Is It?"

After our winter hiatus, the Tuesday Knights returned to the table yesterday, although in a break from tradition we busted out a boardgame for our evening's entertainment.
Clare brought along her new copy of the fabulous Jim Henson's Labyrinth game - based on the film of the same name.
I've previously lamented the necessary brevity of our gaming sessions, but we still managed to easily squeeze in two games last night.
Each time I took the role of David Bowie's Goblin King Jareth, trying to prevent the party (Erica as Sarah, Peter as Hoggle, Clare as Ludo, and Kevin as Sir Didymus) from rescuing baby Toby.
First time round I managed to trap them in a magical dance just as the time ran out, but in the second game - when we all had a better handle on the game - Sarah saved her baby brother.
I'm still not 100 per cent convinced we got all the rules exactly right (there remained some confusion over when - or if - the countdown clock stops once someone enters the Goblin King's castle), but there is so much about the game to love that it didn't really matter. We had a great time!
The dice mechanics, using different polyhedral dice for different traits of the characters, gives the game an almost roleplaying-like element; the laying out of the board as you go helps ensure every game is different; and the plastic miniatures for the main characters are fantastic (and would look amazing professionally painted).
Next month, we return to roleplaying (Simon's back, but Pete wll be absent, so I'll have to talk him through character creation via email - which is dead simple using the system I have in mind).
While I wouldn't tell the Tuesday Knights what I'm entertaining (except that it will be taking place in Knight City), I posted the following huge clue on our group's Facebook page late last night...

TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF HEROPRESS!!!
Somehow I've managed to limp across the line and just about make it to the 10th anniversary of HeroPress.
As you might have noticed (or not), the blog has been running on fumes since before Christmas.
A combination of pill-induced lethargy, and the realisation that non-blogging gives me more free time in the day, has seen postings grind to an almost halt.
HeroPress will still hang around. I have no plans to nuke the site from orbit just yet, and the monthly pin-ups will continue into the far future, even if nothing else pops up in between.
I want to thank everyone from my darling wife, Rachel (whose miniatures blog is going strong once more), and fellow bloggers, to my handful of hardcore readers, for all their support and assistance over the last decade.
Once I get over the current slump, I hope to return to (semi-)regular posting, but probably not the insanity of four or five posts a day.
I want to be more focused (probably on gaming, and gaming-related inspirational material, such as books, films, and comics).
And I want to actually produce something substantive - maybe a fanzine, maybe some fiction - as the blogs that truly succeed - in my eyes - are those where the writer is also a creator. That's what gets people coming back, commenting, getting involved.
Or, I might just pop up tomorrow...

Captain America: Civil War (largely because of the introduction of Spider-Man, but also just a great superhero flick. That said, had I seen it last year, when it came out, rather than the other day, the gong would probably have gone to Rogue One, which was freaking awesome).

HeroPress Review Of The Year (Part One)
PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT OF 2016:
Unsurprisingly, the highlight of 2016, for me, was my extended 50th birthday celebrations. I'd hoped it would be good, but the generosity and inventiveness of Rachel and Paul ensured it far exceeded my expectations.
From my trip back to Bournemouth and the surprise reunion with my university buddies, to our puppy-friendly holiday on the coast, the Tuesday Knights' celebration, and my incredible Des Taylor commission (pictured above), it was an unforgettable few weeks.
GEEK HIGHLIGHT OF 2016:
Without a doubt my gaming highlight of 2016 was finishing, in style, our three-year Heroes & Other Worlds campaign: The Chronicles Of Cidri.
This was the longest, continuous, campaign that I've run - or even played in. And it bowed out in suitably apocalyptic style.
Which is why I've been rather gun shy about starting a new game just yet, as I feel I set the bar high with that campaign and want to ensure - as best as I can - that we hit the ground running with a new game, and can exceed what we've already achieved.
