Picking up from the end of our last session, our characters were standing on the threshold of the isolated Tower Of Doom, a couple of us recovering from being zapped by an enormous lightning trap that Dolly had triggered.
Once again, I (Syr Edvard, the noble fighter and self-appointed leader of the group) raised the question of why we were even exploring this tower, as we were supposed to be taking our precious human cargo of innocents to Krezk (after we got run out of Vallaki, thanks to K'Ao and Rufus's antisocial behaviour).
The only answer anyone had was along the lines of "because it's here"!
|Why are we here again? (Left to Right): Rufus, Dolly, Ragar, K'Ao, Norman, and Syr Edvard|
Dolly (Clare's character) imitated the dance suggested by the stick figures on the door (Dungeon Master Simon made Clare stand up and LARP the routine - much to everyone's amusement, afert I promised not to record it and share it online!) and, much to my surprise, the portal swung open.
Inside, the tower turned out to be a narrow, near derelict, column with three stories - accessible via a a five foot square lift platform in the centre of the room, which was operated by magical statues at each corner of the ground floor base.
Erica's character, K'Ao (with Norman, her badger companion) and I rode the elevator to the top floor - the middle two were pretty much deserted and sported unsafe, rotten, wooden floors.
The top floor was an abandoned bedroom/office, which we promptly ransacked.
There was a suit of plate armour that I sent down to the ground floor in the lift (not only did I think this could be a decent treasure for me, but I also wanted to make sure the lift was safe in the other direction).
I also found a severed head, smelling of lavender, in a small chest.
Looking out the window, K'Ao spotted a large pack of wolves tearing down the causeway towards the tower... and we suddenly realised we were trapped within.
As they got closer it became clear that some of the wolves were more humanoid... WEREWOLVES!
The wolves fell upon our abandoned wagon - while ignoring the other wagon near the tower - tearing our oxen apart, some were sizzled by the lightning trap of the tower door, and then K'Ao and Dolly (who had ridden the lift back to the top) started picking them off in a hail of arrows.
Syr Edvard had journeyed back to the ground floor, learning that Ragar (Kevin's character) and Rufus (Pete's character, although Pete was absent) had organised a defensive blockade, to shield Ireena, Ismark, Myrtle and Freek.
Ragar had also discovered a trap door leading to a torture chamber in the basement containing four angry (but thankfully caged) vampire spawn.
The wolves were driven off, but some of the remaining werewolves were scaling the walls of the tower, seeking to sneak in through a hole in the wall of the second floor.
|Our dashing saviour...|
Meanwhile K'Ao kept us abreast of developments outside: a dashing warrior woman had emerged from the other wagon and was taking on the werewolves single-handed.
We never learned the name of our saviour, but she dispatched several of the lycanthropes before they could assail the tower walls.
Eventually, with Syr Edvard being the only one of us who was truly blooded by the experience, we killed the last werewolf that had gained entrance to the tower.
Gingerly we opened the main door, and found that our mysterious benefactor had vanished - along with her wagon - leaving us , a miniature statue of an oxen, a note (suggesting we might have use of the totem and signed with an 'E') and a sheaf of papers.
Curiouser and curiouser!
