“WARRIORS ACROSS TIME DEFY THE ELDER GODS!Hitting stores in December, the four-part Conan: Serpent War is the Cimmerian's first event title at Marvel - and it includes appearances from several other popular characters from the mind of Robert E Howard.
James Allison will soon die. But it’s not his first death. He’s lived many lives, in many places – lives he can recall in vivid detail. But when an Elder God called the Wyrm reaches across time to James, an ages-spanning quest begins!
The serpent god Set plans to usher in an eternity of darkness, and only the chosen warriors across time and space have a hope of stopping him: Conan The Barbarian, Solomon Kane, Dark Agnes, and the man known as Moon Knight!
In an unprecedented comics event, Robert E. Howard’s characters join forces along with Marvel’s Moon Knight, in an all-new saga built on REH and Marvel lore from across the ages!”
Joining the barbarian for the first time (this time round) are Solomon Kane (the 17th Century Puritan monster-slayer whose adventures Marvel published under their old license back in the '70s and '80s) and Dark Agnes de Chastillon, one of the inspirations for the Red Sonja character (Sonja isn't actually a Howard character, despite the common misconception that she is).
Just when it looked as though I'm getting my comic book spending under control (and back within budget), Marvel goes and announces this - and the prospect of further outings from these and other Howard characters.
I'm all in. Of course. But I do, kind of, wish that Solomon Kane and Dark Agnes' first appearances in the current Marvel Universe had been in their own titles - to let newcomers to the characters get a handle on them first - before throwing them into a cosmic crossver event.
On his own blog, writer Jim Zub says:
"If you’re a Robert E. Howard fan, then Serpent War is definitely for you but, even if you’ve never read a Conan story or don’t know any of the lore at all, I’m building Serpent War to act as a nice jumping on point for grand sword & sorcery adventure."While on ComicBook.com he adds:
"Serpent War is a sprawling cross-dimensional epic bringing together legendary characters from the mind of Robert E. Howard with a bit of Marvel mayhem added in for good measure.
The story I told in Savage Sword was a straight forward sword & sorcery tale.
This one is big, ambitious, and adventurous on a bigger stage.
I hope Serpent War engages long-time Conan fans and also brings new readers on board to see what all the excitement is about."
