|A Gathering Of The Gaming Clan|
Neither Erica not Peter could make last evening's virtual gathering, so that meant we were without K'Ao the elven ranger, Norman her badger familiar, and Rufus the halfling rogue.
Away from his resting colleagues and having retrieved his fallen axe, Syr Edvard took a quick look in the sack at "his" severed head. Only to find out it was no longer his own head, but simply part of a statue instead.
As he went back to camp, Syr Edvard came up a delivery driver whose cart bore a coffin labelled for K'Ao. Edvard told him to leave and the driver did... dumping the coffin at the side of the track once he got out of sight!
With K'Ao (Erica's character) and Rufus (Pete's character) staying with Savid the grey elf and Richard (the guy from some weird dimension called England), the rest of us - Syr Edvard, Ragar (Kevin'c cleric) and Dolly (Clare's fighter) - were able to search the remaining parts of the crumbling mansion with little problem.
We also learned of a prophecy that should the bones of the dragon Argynvost be returned to his mausoleum the gloom over Barovia would be lifted.
So now that's another quest for us: although we were also told that the dragon's skull was in Castle Ravenloft, so this is possibly a job to do after we've defeated Strahd on his home turf!
Once we were sure the mansion was "safe", we escorted Savid around so he could call out for Arabelle, the missing young Vistani girl (granddaughter of Madam Eva) he had been searching for.
He believed she had fled in this direction after being scared by some of those awful twig blight creatures, but in the end it turned out she wasn't there.
We suggested he lead us back to the Vistani camp - currently by Luna Lake - as the young girl might have returned.
A pall of sadness hung over the camp and we learned that Arabelle had not found her way back. In fact, the Vistani now believed she had been abducted by evil druids and taken to the the stone circle atop Yester Hill to be sacrificed in some grim ritual.
Half-a-dozen Vistani toughs agreed to accompany Ragar, Dolly, and Syr Edvard on the rescue mission (Big Mo, Angry Frank, Albert, Boris, Henry, and Ivor).
It turned out to be a steep hill, dotted with many cairns, and the stone circle was more of a low wall around the crest of the hill, obscuring our vision of whatever rites were being conducted there.
We snuck up the southern flank of Yester Hill, towards a copse of trees that would provide us with line-of-sight into the area where we believed the druids had Arabelle.
Unfortunately, the copse was home to a nest of those pesky blight creatures. Syr Edvard and Foulbane went to town chopping, snicker snacking his way through these creatures, as Ragar blasted them with holy fire and Dolly and the Vistani did their part as well.
In no time at all the creatures were kindling and we were checking out the foul, twisted tree at the heart of the copse.
The axe stuck Syr Edvard with thorns when he tried to remove it from the tree, but Dolly had no such problem, and now has the axe in her possession.
In the inner sanctum at the top of the hill we saw six dancing druids ... and Arabelle tied to an altar.
We launched ranged attacks against the cloaked heathens, drawing them out through the narrow entrance and making short work of them.
Syr Edvard freed Arabelle and handed her into the care of Ragar, while - unbeknown to the others - he siddled away to investigate a voice he had heard calling from one of the cairns.
There he discovered a buried skeleton clutching a spear that Syr Edvard felt drawn to, the weapon speaking of power.
Arabelle was returned to the Vistani, and, as a reward, Madam Eva produced the "sword of sunlight" for us - another key element in our battle against Strahd. This mighty weapon appears to be some kind of "laser sword" or "light sabre"!!!
I have to say Syr Edvard was a bit pissed off to learn that Madam Eva had had this sword all along, yet had sent us off on a wild goose chase all around Barovia.
On one hand, this means, in a short space of time, we have "ticked off" two items on the list of McGuffins we were sent to retrieve: the holy symbol and the sun blade.
On the other hand, a rereading of the tarokka cards, strongly suggests that Arabelle had only gone missing - and been put in mortal danger - to justify the prophetic cards... when Madame Eva could have just as easily handed over the sword to us when we first met her.
Syr Edvard is not happy. He's not sure he trusts the Vistani (well, Madam Eva, anyway) any more.
And he also doesn't know what to do with his scary new magic spear.
