As evidenced by my wedding anniversary present that arrived on my birthday last year, Rachel and I can play fast and loose with gift-giving that is supposedly tied to a specific date.
This year, although it's only mid-to-late January, we've already given each other Valentine's Day gifts.
I got Rachel a quartet of summer dresses she wanted and she got me these three amazing-sounding books by Edward Brooke-Hitching, all of which I'm looking at as potential research material to add some strange verisimilitude to my pseudo-Medieval/'80s swords-and-sorcery fantasy game setting, Tekralh (for use with my on-going Frankengame project that I'm fiddling about with for the Tuesday Knights).
The new books, two hardbacks and a paperback, include Brooke-Hitching's latest, The Madman's Library, which is all about outré books, from those wrapped in human skin to those written in indecipherable code; Sky Atlas, a similar deep dive into historical publications, but focussing on mankind's attempts at mapping the heavens; and Fox Tossing, Octopus Wrestling, and Other Forgotten Sports... which pretty much speaks for itself.
I foresee a Spring curled up with these books, scribbling notes as I dive in and out of them, figuring out what can be twisted into a fantasy game setting (without disturbing my players... too much).
