|The mighty Amazon River...|
Previously On The Theoretical Science Foundation:
In Rio, our heroes cross paths with Nazi killers and a secret society then learn of the possible existence of a mysterious city of gold in the Amazon jungle. Backed by The Explorers Club, an expedition to discover the location of Paititi is organised.
Walter Granger and The Explorers Club got to work organising the necessary supplies for our expedition in search of Paititi, reassuring us that Fr Creus was an honest soul and not inclined to be swayed by the Nazis or their flashy offerings.
Just for good measure, though, we arranged for extra shipments of food to delivered to the Saint Xavier Mission, for Fr Creus to distribute to his flock in Manaus.
Using our new seaplane, our first hop was to Belém to refuel, then on to Manaus, only to find that Fr Crues was temporarily away from St Xavier's in the city and visiting a secondary mission further up the river.
His staff assured us that they would take us to visit him the following morning.
While Oynx (Mark's daredevil pilot) worked on the plane, the rest of us went for a meal in the city.
Freya (Clare's photojournalist) suggested we pop in to the local newspaper and see what the journalists had to say about the expeditions to find the lost city of gold.
The Brazilian hacks were charmed by our Portuguese-speaking Irish priest, Fr Ned (Simon's character) and a great evening of drinking and gossiping was had. While they told us nothing really new about the various failed attempts to find either the Soldier's Tomb or the lost city, they confirmed what we already knew.
However, they did share a rumour that, in his youth, Fr Creus may have actually found the tomb said to contain the map to Paititi.
The next day we climbed into a small motor boat and headed up the river, as a thunderstorm rolled in.
Along with a resplendent array of parrots, alligators and other native wildlife, we all thought we caught glimpses of mysterious ghostly faces in the mist, but quickly shook this off.
Arriving at the jungle mission, we were greeted at the dock by Fr Creus, a man in his mid-50s with friendly brown eyes and salt and pepper hair, and a throng of natives.
We were swept into the mission building, given food and drink, and a guided tour begun... when suddenly a gust of wind extinguished all the candles and Buck (my global explorer) intoned, in a gravelly, demonic voice:
"Death! Death to you all!
Wolfram's eye is upon you!"
|Buck's not feeling himself today!|
It was immediately obvious to Fr Creus and Fr Ned, upon seeing the yellow pallor of Buck's distorted face, that he was possessed by some supernatural entity... and an emergency exorcism was called for... with extreme prejudice!
Buck lunged for Creus, as Ned socked him in the jaw, and Oynx grabbed up a wooden candlestick and smashed it over the back of Buck's head.
Freya saw her opportunity to snap some unique photographs as everyone else tried to wrestle the burly adventurer to the ground.
Although Buck was seemingly knocked unconscious, the entity within him kept puppeteering his body until Ned was able to channel the power of Christ and compel the demon out of his friend's body.
Buck writhed around as a three foot long, ethereal snake with the head of a leech crawled out of his mouth, hissing and spitting until Creus directed Ned to pour the nearby font of holy water over the creature, causing it to evaporate.
